Configuring Search Synonyms for Content Items

Overview

The synonym search (also known as search synonym) feature improves search results by allowing you to create lists of synonyms. For example, you might want a search for big to return results for large and huge, etc. Or, if your users search using terms specific to your industry, you might want to set up a synonym that associates commonly used words, such as mobile, cell and phone.

This article provides the procedure for configuring Search Synonyms for content items.

Information

Synonyms are language-specific. If you have multiple languages enabled, you need to enable synonyms per language. For more information about enabling search for multiple languages, see Enabling Search in Multiple Languages.

Note that by default, new synonyms work only on new content. If you want to apply new synonyms to existing content, you need to rebuild the content search index as described in Reindexing Content Search.

Before you rebuild the content search index, consider performance and the needs of your site users. It is recommended that you do not reindex search manually during peak usage hours or a site-wide campaign, etc.

Process

To set up Search Synonyms for content items:

1. Navigate to Admin Console > System > Settings > Search.
2. Navigate to the Content Search > Synonyms tab.
3. Under Synonyms, type in a comma-separated list of synonyms for the required term.
4. Click Add Synonyms.

Rebuild the content search index, if you want to apply the added synonyms to the existing content too.
