Overview

A user might ask a question like, "I cannot change the response after I have indicated that I May join an event?"

Symptoms could include:

• The user sees a message “You can no longer attend this event”
• This happens with other attendance options as well (Yes, Maybe, No).
• Cannot change attendance option, once responded
• Cannot reproduce with another private event

Solution

Root Cause

If an event is an "open" event, anyone can respond to it, including users who have not explicitly been invited. If an event is a "closed" or "private" event, only users who have been invited can respond to it.

The sequence of actions that leads to our problem is:

1. The event was set to open first, and a user (who was not invited) chose "Maybe" so they became an attendee but not from an invitation.
2. The event was set to Private / Closed later. At this point, if the users were explicitly invited, they can still change their attendance option. If they were not explicitly invited, like the affected user, they can no longer change their attendance options.

Resolution Steps

You have two options for resolving this:

1. Changing the event type back to "Open"
   1. Set the event type back to open
   2. Ask the user to visit the event and change their attendance option
   3. Set the event type back to "Closed" or "Private"
2. Avoid the situation, by inviting the user to Events
   1. When creating a private or closed event, invite the user explicitly.
   2. Do not change the event to "Open" just to allow users to reply.
   3. Note: If the user had previously replied to an event without being invited, while it was an open event, they cannot be invited to the event again. In this case, solution 2 cannot be applied, and you have to use solution 1.

Testing

After you have applied one of the above solution, check if the user has successfully been able to change their attendance response to an event.
