Type of Groups and Memberships

Overview

This article provides information regarding the different types of groups and their memberships.

Environment

Jive Interactive Intranet - Jive Core

Information

Unlike spaces, which use permissions to determine access, social groups primarily rely on membership to determine access. The users need permission to join a group if it is private or secret. Because groups do not exist inside spaces, they do not inherit any space permissions.

Types of Groups

A group's type (open, members-only, and so on) determines who can join, see content, participate, and invite new members. Use the following table which helps you understand the different types of groups that can be created in a community.

Group owners and community managers can change the settings for a group after it is created.

Secret Group Private Group Members Only Open
What is visible to non-members? None  Group Name Only  All  All
Who can see the content?  Member  Member  Anyone  Anyone
Who can participate?  Member  Member  Member  Anyone
Who can invite new members?  Member or Admin  Member or Admin  Member or Admin  Anyone
Who approves new members?  Admin  Admin  n/a  n/a

Inviting Members to Private Groups

Members invited to a private group are automatically in the group. Their name says they did not accept the invitation, but they do not have the choice to accept the invitation.

  1. Create a private group.
  2. Send an invitation to a user to be added to that group.
  3. The invited user accepts the invite and is added to the group.
